News from Congresswoman Deborah Ross

Representative First Last

Dear Friend,

The first three months of the Trump presidency have come and gone, but my resolve to keep fighting for our community is stronger than ever. I am using every tool at my disposal to combat Donald Trump's attacks on North Carolina.

I want to share an update on what I've been doing lately to push back against Trump and his allies in Congress.

RESULTS: Protecting Women's Health Research

Last month, reports circulated that Trump and his administration intended to gut funding for women's health research. That includes vital research on breast cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and other chronic diseases that affects millions of women. Trump even cut funding for the Women's Health Initiative, our nation's largest and most consequential women's health study.

That's why I led members of the Democratic Women's Caucus in calling on Trump to immediately reverse course and cease his persistent attacks on women's health.

I'm relieved to share that the administration has restored funding for the Women's Health Initiative. However, the fight isn't over. I will continue standing up and speaking out while Trump wages a war on science and on women.

Defending Due Process for Everyone

I am extremely concerned by Trump's constant attacks on the right to due process. Violating this sacred right for one person weakens it for everyone. That includes international students at North Carolina universities whose visas have been arbitrarily revoked without any sort of warning or hearing.

After a massive public backlash, the Trump administration restored legal status for many international students. However, Trump's backpedaling proves what we already knew - that these efforts to restrict legal immigration and deny due process are patently illegal.

In a recent House Judiciary Committee markup, I offered an amendment to ensure that ICE cannot use funds from Republicans' budget to terminate the legal status of student visa holders without providing adequate due process. I put House Republicans on the record, and they unanimously voted against my amendment. You can watch my speech on the amendment and the importance of ensuring due process for everyone in the video below.

Fighting for an Independent Judiciary

House Republicans put forth a dangerous bill that would ban district court judges from implementing nationwide injunctions. Recently, judges have issued these injunctions in critical cases that have protected the American people, including preventing Elon Musk from accessing sensitive government data and blocking Trump's unconstitutional birthright citizenship Executive Order.

This bill is one part of a broader campaign by Trump and Congressional Republicans to attack, unfairly influence, and weaken the judiciary. I voted against their bill, and instead offered my own Fair Courts Act as an alternative. They passed their bill without the support of any Democrats, so I made sure to speak against it in the House.

Calling Out Cuts to EPA

I'm proud to represent much of the Research Triangle Park, which houses the largest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research and development facility in the nation. I was appalled to learn that EPA plans to eliminate the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and cut as many as 1,155 scientists, many of whom work at the RTP EPA campus.

Scientific researchers at EPA have dedicated their careers to serving the American people and solving some of our most complex environmental problems. That's why I joined my colleagues on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee in demanding that EPA maintain staffing and resources at ORD.
