Dear Friend, This week marked one year since Donald Trump returned to office for his second term. Since then, North Carolinians have experienced 12 months marked by uncertainty, chaos, corruption, and division. In Wake County, families are struggling to pay their bills and make ends meet, and across the country we are seeing unprecedented attacks on our rights and freedoms. Please know that I remain committed to fighting back on behalf of our community.

This year, millions of Americans saw a significant increase in their health care costs following the expiration of the ACA tax credits at the end of 2025. This cruel blow unfortunately came just after Trump and Congressional Republicans put more than 600,000 North Carolinians at risk of losing their Medicaid coverage through the enactment of the Big Ugly Law. These actions have forced North Carolina parents and seniors to choose between their prescriptions and their groceries. While I was proud to pass a bipartisan bill to extend the ACA tax credits in the House, there is still a long way to go to get this bill signed into law. I am doing everything in my power to push this extension across the finish line and protect North Carolinians’ access to life-saving health care.

I spoke on the House Floor to urge my colleagues to work with Democrats to save these credits.

Trump's tariffs were sold as a way to lower prices. Instead, the American people have been forced to foot the bill. Families here in Wake County are still struggling to afford groceries, housing, and basic necessities, while our small businesses face constant uncertainty and lower profits. Business owners across our state tell me they can’t hire, invest, or plan for the future because of ever-shifting tariff policies. That’s why over the past year, I’ve met with small business owners, local governments, housing advocates, and more to discuss how we can work together to lower skyrocketing costs. This administration refuses to take real steps to lower costs and North Carolinians are paying the price.
|
I held a roundtable with small business owners in Wake County to hear how tariffs are affecting their businesses.

Like many Americans, I am deeply disturbed by the shameful actions we have seen from federal immigration authorities in North Carolina and across the country. Masked agents descended on our cities, terrorized law-abiding citizens, abducted people off the streets, and even killed a U.S. citizen – all without any oversight or accountability. That’s why I have called on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or be removed from office. After the tragic killing in Minneapolis, the nation is learning what North Carolinians already know: DHS desperately needs new leadership.

I spoke in the House Judiciary Committee about immigration raids.

More than a year after Hurricane Helene, communities in Western North Carolina are still waiting for the federal support that was promised by President Trump during his first week in office. Under the Trump administration, DHS has ignored many in Western North Carolina as they try to rebuild after the storm. New red tape has left local governments waiting for reimbursements, and communities that experienced unimaginable loss are still desperate for help. I introduced legislation to speed up the flow of recovery dollars to Western North Carolina and I won’t stop working until our state has fully recovered.
|
I introduced the FEMA Administrative Reform Act in December to help bring aid to Western North Carolina faster.
|
I hosted a roundtable this week to discuss the challenges colleges and universities are facing under the Trump administration.

Federal cuts to science and higher education are threatening the groundbreaking research that happens right here in the Triangle. The work of our universities and research institutions saves lives and helps to propel our state and country forward. Devastating funding cuts are crippling our universities, hurting students and researchers, and jeopardizing our economic strength. This week in Washington, DC, I hosted university and college leaders from across North Carolina to discuss the new challenges they have faced under the Trump administration and what we can do to combat these setbacks.
|
These actions are just the tip of the iceberg. Amidst this chaos, uncertainty, and difficulty in Washington, please know my focus remains on getting things done for Wake County. Passing legislation and bringing federal dollars home to our community will always be my priorities, and I will keep working to make life better in our community.
