Dear Friend, While spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year, it's also one of the busiest on Capitol Hill. From calling for the extension of funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program to championing an amendment to end prison gerrymandering, we’ve covered a lot of ground in Washington. News from Congresswoman Deborah Ross

Representative First Last

Dear Friend,

While spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year, it's also one of the busiest on Capitol Hill. From calling for the extension of funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program to championing an amendment to end prison gerrymandering, we’ve covered a lot of ground in Washington. I want to take a quick moment to provide more information on my work in Congress on behalf of the people of Wake County.

Calling for affordable, high-speed internet

From accessing health care to getting an education and so much more, high-speed internet is a basic necessity – not a luxury – in the 21st century. That's why I am urging the House and Senate leadership to extend funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal initiative that helps families in North Carolina and beyond access affordable, high-speed internet. Without additional funding, in the next few weeks, roughly 1 in 5 North Carolina households could lose access to affordable broadband connectivity. We must extend this critical program to ensure all North Carolinians have the internet access they need.

Advocating for gun violence prevention through safe gun storage

During a recent partisan House Judiciary Committee field hearing in Philadelphia, I highlighted the need to focus on comprehensive solutions to combat the epidemic of gun violence in America. In the United States, guns are now the leading cause of injury or death for children. As gun violence continues to tear apart communities across the country, we must implement safe storage laws and other common-sense solutions to keep our people safe.

Supporting survivors of child sex abuse through bankruptcy reform

Far too often, organizations facing child sex abuse litigation will exploit our bankruptcy system to evade accountability and circumvent justice. That's why I recently introduced bipartisan legislation to close loopholes in our bankruptcy system and protect survivors of child sex abuse. We owe it to victims to create a fair justice system that gives them a real voice as well as access to the remedies they are owed.

Ending the practice of prison gerrymandering

Last week, I offered an amendment to House Republicans' so-called Equal Representation Act to end the unjust, undemocratic practice of prison gerrymandering. Prison gerrymandering occurs because the Census counts incarcerated individuals in the prisons where they are held, rather than the communities they call home. This practice unfairly skews political representation when districts are drawn. Unfortunately, House Republicans refused to bring this important amendment to the floor for a vote.

Across the country, over a million incarcerated people are being used as political pawns to falsely increase the voting power of areas far from their home communities. Watch below as I spoke in support of the amendment on the House floor.
