Dear Friend,

August is my favorite time of year because it means I can spend time at home in Wake County. From my town halls in Knightdale and a senior center to a stop at a food bank, I have spent the last two weeks speaking directly with our community and listening to the issues that matter most to you.

Take a look at the recap of my August so far.

Town Hall in Knightdale

Thank you to everyone who joined me and Knightdale Mayor Jessica Day for an important conversation about the challenges we’re facing and how we can fight back together.

We discussed the dangerous cuts in Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Law, which strips health care from 17 million Americans and cuts nutrition assistance for families across the country. We also discussed important topics like veterans' healthcare, clean energy, and more.

Democracy depends on engaged citizens who show up and speak out. I was grateful to hear directly from you about the issues that impact you. Please be sure to subscribe to my newsletter and follow me on social media to receive an update when I host my next town hall.

Fighting Hunger as Republicans Cut SNAP Funding

I toured the Catholic Parish Outreach Food Pantry in Raleigh, which has seen a 60% increase in families seeking help. Last month, Republicans passed their Big Ugly Law, which makes major cuts to SNAP. I got to see firsthand how these cuts will hurt our most vulnerable neighbors. This is wrong, and I am fighting to make sure every family can get the food they need.

Protecting Medicare and Social Security for Our Seniors

I had the pleasure of visiting the Garner Senior Center for a town hall, where I spoke with residents about their concerns for the future. Seniors rely on government programs like Medicare and Social Security to thrive, but Republican cuts threaten these essential programs. I spoke with residents about how I can best fight for them.

Preparing for Storm Season

With hurricane season already underway, I met with local and national preparedness leaders in Raleigh to talk about how North Carolina can get ready for the next big storm. The Trump administration has made devastating cuts to critical federal programs that help us prepare for extreme weather. From Texas to North Carolina, we’ve seen the life and death importance of high-quality, accurate storm prediction and information systems.

As a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I will continue working with our local and state partners to ensure that North Carolina has the resources we need to prepare for and respond to dangerous weather.

Defending Medicare and Medicaid at 60 years

As we marked the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, I stopped by Advance Community Health’s Advance Axcess Campus to talk about how federal support helps provide urgent care and essential services to over 30,000 patients every year.

While many of these benefits are under direct attack by the Trump administration, I will keep fighting to protect the life-saving programs that North Carolinians rely on every day.

Honoring Women Veterans

Women veterans often face unique challenges during and after their service to our country. I met with women veterans and local leaders in Raleigh to hear how we can better support them.

In Congress, I have been a champion for women veterans. I introduced the Military Sexual Trauma Retirement Equity Act, which seeks to ensure all military retirees with disabilities caused by military sexual trauma (MST) can receive their full retirement and disability compensation. We must do more to ensure our women servicemembers and veterans can get the comprehensive care they need.
