Dear Friend,

It's been a busy few weeks in Washington! From supporting survivors of domestic violence to assisting our vibrant restaurant industry, I'm eager to share an update on my work for the people of Wake County.

Signed into Law - Supporting Access to Nurse Exams Act

SANE Act

My bipartisan legislation, the Supporting Access to Nurse Exams (SANE) Act, was signed into law by President Biden last month. Included in the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), this legislation will address the nationwide shortage of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), who are instrumental in providing medical care to survivors of sexual assault and collecting forensic evidence that can be used in court.

Carolina Public Press story on SANEs

For too long, North Carolina has faced a critical shortage of SANE-certified nurses, and our hospitals have not had the resources needed to train and retain these specialized nurses. This legislation will help us ensure survivors are treated with dignity and receive timely, trauma-informed care regardless of where they seek treatment.

Last week, I proudly voted for additional relief for our restaurant industry in Wake County and beyond. One of my first major votes in Congress was to pass the American Rescue Plan, which established the Restaurant Revitalization Fund. This historic program delivered $28.6 billion in relief to the restaurant industry. However, as the funding was depleted, many restaurants were left without enough support.

The U.S. House of Representatives just passed urgently-needed legislation that will deliver additional relief to restaurants in our area. I'm hopeful that my colleagues in the Senate will act quickly to get this legislation across the finish line.

Renaming the Oberlin Village Post Office

For months, I have urged the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to change the name of the Cameron Village Post Office to the Oberlin Village Post Office, which more accurately conveys its geographic location and recognizes the extraordinary legacy of the Oberlin community. I'm grateful that USPS has honored my request. Located in the Oberlin Village District inside a property owned by the Oberlin Baptist Church, this new name pays tribute to the strength and perseverance of the Oberlin community.
