Dear Friend,

Following the devastating tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, people from across North Carolina have been reaching out to me and my office about the gun violence epidemic. Heartbreakingly, mass shootings have become a steady drumbeat in American life, striking community after community, and instilling fear in the American people as we drop our kids off at school, go to the grocery store, or enter a house of worship.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on commonsense gun violence prevention legislation to help stop these tragedies. I voted to pass both the Protecting Our Kids Act and the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act. These measures will create regulations and systems to protect Americans against senseless gun violence and keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people.

The Protecting Our Kids Act will raise the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles from 18 to 21, crack down on gun trafficking and straw purchases to get illegal guns off the street, close the ghost gun loophole, and more.

Protecting Our Kids Act

The Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act allows family members and law enforcement officers to petition a federal court to remove an individual’s access to firearms if they are deemed a danger to themselves or others. In addition, the bill incentivizes more states to develop these 'red flag' laws.

I am encouraged that the Senate has released a bipartisan framework on gun violence prevention legislation, and I hope this results in tangible action. Now that the House has passed these measures, the Senate must act swiftly to protect the American people.
